Group Reiki Sessions
The Transformative Power of Group Reiki Sessions: A Journey into Energy Healing
By Dennis Bluthardt, Namaste Studios
Practicing Reiki in the community is an increasingly popular way for groups to come together and find a meditative state; some might even call it a form of group therapy. In 2014, Reikigrams, a kind of Tai Chi/Qi Gong for Reiki, was developed. It is like a concert, where the crowd is a part of the performance, receiving an energetic ‘tune-up’ and making a powerful healing statement. But what if the idea behind Reiki is the same as with any other alternative or complementary medicine?
The magic in these group sessions is that more than one teacher is usually present, and we’re all working together to channel some powerful, healing energies. This can help you become more introverted on your healing journey. Connecting with like-minded individuals who collectively project love, peace, and happiness is also lovely.
After a session, you can expect to feel one, some, or all of the fantastic physical effects you would think during a massage or after a hot yoga session. Some of our clients have even claimed they feel “a little high” after a healing session.

The Unique Aspects of Group Reiki Sessions
Reiki can be given in any number of personal situations, but it is most commonly given in one-on-one interactions or group situations with a meditative quality; each situation has pros and cons.
When you have a session one-on-one, it is more personal.
The practitioner can bestow their undivided focus upon each client’s requirements.
Conversely, the group produces energy. And sometimes, the energy created in a group can have a more significant effect. Some people do better in a group setting because the collective energy is more important and different from that created in a more solitary environment.
Safety and security are two primary components of the “container,” this container must be in place for each client before the session. Again, each client is responsible for creating their container and determines when such a creation has been made. This sense of sacred space is created in many ways and is indeed a personal creation. It is beneficial if the practitioner provides a “model/container” where clients can build their virtual “tabernacle.” Touch, Healing, Teaching, and Peace (all the same thing) are always “steps along the path/forgotten acts of Creation.” They are honored by these acts.
Understanding Reiki and Its Benefits
Reiki is an alternative therapy, often called energy healing, originated in Japan. It was founded in the late 1800s and is now used worldwide in various forms. The Reiki practitioner lays their hands on or holds them just above the recipient’s body and transfers universal energy to the recipient. Reiki is regulated in some countries but not in others. Reiki practitioners exist on a continuum, with some on the far left seeing Reiki as a spiritual practice and others on the far right seeing it as a psychophysiological phenomenon familiar to many cultures.
Here’s how it works: Energy can stagnate in the body with physical injury or possibly emotional pain. Medicine that uses energy seeks to return the body to its natural balance and restore health.
It does this by addressing what it sees as interruptions in the flow of energy within the body. These interruptions can build up over time and lead to any number of physical or emotional illnesses. Acupuncture and acupressure, among other energy-based techniques, are often used to manipulate energy pathways, or meridians, in the body so that energy can flow as it should and heal whatever is amiss.
In traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is the practice of inserting skinny needles into specific parts of the body. These parts are located along what practitioners believe to be pathways or meridians through which vital energy, or “qi,” flows. Acupuncture promotes healing by stimulating the flow of energy. Despite being an ancient practice, acupuncture is finding increased acceptance in the West for treating the human body’s ills.
In the same way, acupressure uses manual pressure on the same points as acupuncture, but instead of needles, it uses fingers and palms. This makes acupressure a good option for those who might be worried about acupuncture and an excellent choice for those who want a non-invasive treatment. Both techniques have the same endpoint: they assist with somatic healing, help reduce the stress that burdens so many of us, and lead us to improved states of health, physically and mentally. They are two sides of the same coin.
In summary, energy medicine practices such as acupuncture and acupressure seek to find and remove energy obstructions. The premise is that when these blocks are removed, the energy will flow easily and unobstructed all over the body, and the body will be healthy and disease-free. Acupressure can be done on oneself and is frequently used for calming, pain alleviation, and nudging the body toward a natural healing state.
Both strategies work to eliminate energy blockages and boost energy flow, which is good for our health and well-being. Energy medicine works directly with the elemental energetic imbalances it thinks are illnesses’ “root” causes. It works to create an inner state in the body that’s loving and peaceful, which is more likely to happen when the body is not sick.
Energetic imbalance = illness
Energetic harmony = health.
Improving energy flow around the body, say practitioners, can soothe, lower hurt, hasten recovery, and minimize other signs of sickness.
Reiki has been around for many years, and over time, many benefits have been reported by those who undertake this type of healing. Emotional clarity is one of the benefits that can be achieved.
One of the most documented benefits is that Reiki increases energy levels. It has also improved confidence and self-esteem, making you happier and more optimistic about life. I have seen this in my Reiki sessions with clients and even experienced it when receiving Reiki.
There are many other healing facilities and energy workers around the world who come together for group healing sessions. What makes this group energy healing so different is that it is one of the largest, most experienced, and easily accessible by almost anyone. Therefore, we can offer an experience unlike anything you could have in your community!
How to Prepare for a Group Reiki Session
Before entering a Reiki group session, always set personal intentions. When you do this, the session is structurally stable. You now have a beam aiming toward possible emotional healing, stress relief, or, at the very least, an interim version of yourself that feels better than before entering the session. One’s session partner can do the same thing. I need to set an intention since my mind tends to wander when instructed to focus on anything. You want to maximize the group experience by culturing that from beforehand, heading into the initial session with a clear mind as to what you’re focusing on.
Prepare beforehand by setting intentions mentally and spiritually. This might include journaling about intentions or practicing a deep belly breathing technique. Find what personally works (as a ritual practice) to ground and prepare for coloring a new picture with good people.
The basic structure usually includes (1) an introduction, (2) meditation, and (3) a group sharing session. At the beginning, the group facilitator’s role is to welcome participants, go over the session’s rules, and have a basic format explaining what kind of journey the group is about to embark on. The second half commonly involves guided meditation, meaning that the person leading the meditation has some structure (a script based on visualization techniques, transpersonal psychology, Buddhist awareness practices, understanding the stages of holotropic breathwork, etc.) that they have you listen to, for everyone to enter/enjoy a more profound experience. This also (as an exercise) helps to get the session going as a group effort.
Audiences have seen this go many ways: this might be as simple as a deep-breathing session; maybe we do a loving-kindness/Golden Buddha meditation; perhaps we’re all tripping out. The first example will invariably have a room full of beginners; if you’re part of the second group, it involves around 15–25 minutes where everyone can go around and talk about their life experiences, interests, and what types of supernatural pursuits generally find them interested in heading about some spiritual awakening.
The Role of the Reiki Practitioner in Group Sessions
As a Reiki practitioner guiding a group, you wear many hats, and your role in creating a safe, welcoming space is crucial. You set an intention for the session so participants are prepared to receive the energy work, and you consciously communicate that you are ready to proceed.
With hand placements and visualization, you have multiple ways to balance and direct energy effectively. Remember, as a Reiki practitioner, you know how to guide yourself through an energy session. You may also place your hands in different balance positions on the body or around the energy field.
Many practitioners begin a session with a guided trance meditation or teach simple breathing exercises. Beginner practitioners might visualize the movement of energy coming out of their hands for the first time. The breathwork that they bring with them, as a part of their meditation technique, may reduce the rate of the sympathetic and autonomic responses (like the ability to calm the fight, flight, freeze, or faint) that are associated with stress so that they can relax, receive, and heal. You observe the diminishing effects of every facet of existence on your situations when you take a holistic approach. You see what is causing what to happen in your life and the lives of others or if it is not genuinely causing something to happen. In you, it has more effects than you may appreciate. And if those effects are actual, they also affect your not-so-physically tight niche.
Testimonials and Experiences
Many of us who function as conduits for the energy in these sessions (and we are all conduits in this work!) have witnessed, time and again, the meaningful and even delightful emotional changes people have undergone during our sessions. Since then, our group has operated subtly but noticeably differently.
“A newfound state of tranquility, ease, and clear-headedness has taken up residence within my being,” she reported.
Many open up about their lives during the sessions. It’s a safe space. A surprising number mentioned how much they love the “energies” of the other members, most of whom had never met each other before!
The vibes in LA are just on point. How does this happen?
The explanation is simple: one member even said the Reiki session was “the first in a long time where I wasn’t afraid to be very vulnerable.”
Yet another remembered the feeling of a “breakthrough moment where I was just excited to feel free again, just feel like I’m not being judged, and you know that’s happening all the time in LA. Get me out of here!”
Reiki group sessions present an exceptional opportunity for individuals to associate energy work with the healing process. While private Reiki sessions have their unique qualities, the group setting in a Reiki session offers a kind of communal experience that many people find deeply resonant.
The gatherings foster a sense of community among those present. They enable people to unite, albeit in a virtual space, over the shared pursuit of wellness. The dynamic created by each group is what makes these sessions so powerful. When we assemble, we generate an impactful collective force because many of us are not only sharing space but also sharing what we have gone through, what we are going through, and what we hope to achieve in the future.
Group Reiki sessions embody a holistic healing philosophy, underscoring the interconnection between mind, body, and spirit. Holistic healing is more than just a treatment. It is a way of life.
It is healing from the inside out and the outside in, and it sees the person being treated as a whole, not a sum of parts. Anyone can do Reiki, though not everyone does it the same way.
Group Reiki sessions, without the participation of the giver, can be a little tricky. Still, they can also be an excellent way for individuals to share a safe space to experience vulnerability and healing.
If you want to know the advantages of group Reiki, you should try local sessions. Many practitioners make it easy to start this life-altering practice with basic classes or workshops. They might also give you insight into what to expect if you join them in a session. Doing so could take you a few steps closer to profound healing.
We welcome you to share your Reiki experiences in the comments or ask any questions you might have. Your feedback might light the path for another to follow into the world of healing. Together, let us build a community that focuses on another form of whole-body wellness.
